Happy New Year!
Welcome back! I hope you have all had a good rest and enjoyed the holiday.
This term in class 1 we will start off with the topic of Dungeons and Dragons! As a class we will explore the middle ages in a lot of depth. We will be learning about the way people lived and why during medieval times. We will find out this information through story, images and research using books and ICT. We will also be extremely lucky to have a look at some artefacts and replicas from that time in order to make predictions and find out about how they were used. Not only will we be learning about everyday life, we will also be learning about the artwork and music of that time. In art we will be producing our own portraits and coats of arms to express who we are and who we think we might have been in the medieval times. In music we will explore and reflect upon music from the middle ages and develop an understanding of rhythm and dynamics. We will apply our knowledge of rhythm to PE where we will be learning some real traditional dances to perform. We will be applying some of our French this term to the Norman Conquest as well as PE (as many of the dances were written in French). In science we will begin by looking at some diseases of the middle ages and compare this with health care and hygiene today. We will then move on to learning about forces and motion as we will be designing and building our own catapults for battle.
We will celebrate our learning at the end of the topic with a traditional medieval feast relating to some of the religious celebrations of that period. This will allow the children to take on a role of someone from the Middle Ages, cook the food for the feast and dance their medieval steps at the party.
Once again, we welcome anyone who would like to listen to readers or share a specialist skill in school. We would like to say a big thank you to all the people that came into school last term.
